June 2016 Open Day Presentation and Etiquiette at Shows - with David and Mary Biggs (Dalwood flock)

August 2016 Open Day with Josh Quant (Redlands Flock)

Different people keep different sheep for different reasons and Josh Quant told us that he had gone to the market one day with the intention of buying chickens and came home with some Jacob sheep! Furthermore, the sheep he bought were being sold by Geoff Connabeer (Crann Dair Flock) and, later, when Josh entered them in a show they did better than Geoff's sheep which were present that day.

At Redlands Farm in Devon 26 people were wecomed into a large shed which dwarfed four areas of tables, chairs, a lorry and some farm equipment in one corner, and Josh's entire flock.  The sheep were penned into individual groups (ewes, ewe lambs, 2016 show sheep etc) along two sides of the shed and this allowed plenty of viewing space.

After coffee everyone travelled on an open trailer "over the hill and far away" along narrow Devon lanes to see the Redland cattle herds and Barry, Josh's father, explained, with evident pride, how the family had built up the farm and the suckler herds.

The afternoon talk, 'Points to consider when selecting a ram lamb for your flock' was given by David Biggs using examples from Josh's pens of ram lambs.

Thank you to Josh and his family for the generous lunch and a very relaxed, well organised and enjoyable day.

In the afternoon David Harris from Pearce Seeds gave a talk about the importance of considering the levels of nutrients and trace elements in the soil and their influence on grasses and pasture management.
Thanks go to Janet and her team for preparation of the venue and for the lunch, and to the people who made the cakes for morning and afternoon tea.

2016 Fleece Competition

Angela Gilbert was pleased with the nine entries for the 2016 SW Fleece Competition but commented that paying more attention to skirting the fleeces, removing vegetable matter, and presenting them rolled correctly would have improved the standard even further.
Seen here, Angela presents the Wool Cup to Sarah Weaver (Yakov Flock) whose fleeces took first and second places.

Fleeces from Judy Holder's flock (Billinghay Flock) were placed third and fourth.

AT HOME AT THE BLACKALLER FLOCK IN APRIL

We had beautiful weather for our visit to the Blackaller Flock and it was a lovely chance to catch up on everybody’s news and tales of their lambing.  We gathered for coffee at Peter’s barn but there was initially no sign of sheep until Peter went off to another field, called his sheep and they trustingly followed him some distance along the road and through the gate into his field and right up to the middle of the crowd of members.  He admitted that he had not had a very good lambing this year with more problems than usual but the sheep we saw had some very good strong lambs all looking well.  Peter Hull mentioned that he and Cheryl from Langport had had their most successful lambings ever for the last two years when they had had no lambing problems at all with either ewes or lambs and they had lambed at a genuine 200% both years.  He thought it might be down to a special drench they had used for those two years which he had bought from JG Animal Health, Malvern, WR13 5LF, telephone 01186 880482  and he thoroughly recommended other members to try it.

Peter Hull then showed us his sheep deckchair which he makes to order.  One of the sheep was easily lifted into it and was then in the perfect position for foot-trimming or any other task needed that required an immobilised sheep.  Committee member, Judy Holder reported that she had already purchased one of the chairs and had been able to trim all her ewe’s feet after they had lambed with no problems.  For more details of the seat, contact Peter Hull, Arlington House, Bow Street, Langport, Somerset  TA10 9PQ, telephone 01458 8259292 or email:peterhull@talktalk.net.

Cheryl Hull demonstrating the deck chair:-

We could have stayed for ages in the sunshine talking sheep but at lunchtime some members moved on to the village to go to the pub where we had a table booked for twenty two and enjoyed an excellent lunch.  David Biggs proposed a vote of thanks to Peter Hunt for his excellent organisation of what had been a very enjoyable few hours spent at North Bovey.

THE SHOWING WORKSHOP IN JULY

This was a very successful and enjoyable day entirely organised by Chris and Charlotte Slee with help from their Auntie Shirley who did all the catering for the lunch which was enhanced with delicious Ruby Red Devon beef supplied from Chris' own herd.

There were demonstartions of sheep washing, carding and trimming and some of the newer members agreed that they would aim to bring a team of their own sheep to the shows next year.  The fleece competition was judged by Anna Milner and she awarded the South West Wool Trophy to Peter Gorringe with The Slees winning the runner up award.

1. South West Winter Meeting and visit to Bovey Handloom Mill December 2013

Over 20 members enjoyed visiting the Bovey Handloom Weavers at Bovey Tracey. The family business has been going for over 70 years, with the original owner's daughter, Liz and husband Stuart Gregory using the same wooden handlooms, still operated by hand or foot. Members were shown how the different semi automatic handlooms were worked by Stuart, who also went into the history of the machinery.  (If members want to get their own tweed made, they will have to get their fleecewool spun into a fineness stated as approximately representing 256 yds in 1 lb wool!) Colourful tweeds were being made there, some being for private commisions and several members bought some lovely Christmas presents in the shop afterwards. After lunch at the Riverside Inn, most of the group continued on to member, Terri Holman's nearby holding for tea and also saw her very fit Jacob sheep on lush pasture and then into her workshop to see her unique pottery for which she is well known worldwide. Several said afterwards that it was one of the best days we had held. Our thanks to Liz and Stuart for specially opening up their mill out of season and to Terri too for looking after us all so well afterwards.

2. South West Region AGM, October 20th 2013 at Old Feniton Village Hall, Nr Honiton, EX14 3BG

Show & Sale 2013 Following on from last year's success, the  Show & Sale again was again held this year in league with the RBST on  September 26th. There was an official Jacob inspection by Robert Locker and Clive Richardson before the Show and an official Jacob judge, in John Emberton.  This year we also held a Wool on the Hoof class.  We were very grateful to our main sponsor, The Natural Fibre Company, and Sue Blacker who gave generous prize vouchers for the Champion, Reserve Breed Champion and Champion and Reserve Champion Wool on the Hoof too.  The highest price paid was 400 guineas for a shearling ewe bred by Bridget Wilson from the Wales Region. Photo below shows John Emberton judging the shearling ewes, with Ivor Coates and Bridget Wilson and their shearling ewes. The latter went on to win Breed Champion and Wool on the Hoof too.  For all results of this Show & sale please scroll down.

  • August 18th Open Day at Julian Newth's Prestcombe Flock (3608) This was held in Somerset, opposite the Royal Bath & West Showground entrance, and Julian had organised a gfull and very interesting day for us all. We looked round his prize pigs with baby piglets, including a huge Landrake pig that had won Interbreed Champion this year. Then Mr Chilcott (Chilly) expertly guided members into live lamb grading of both pure Jacobs, cross bred Jacobs and mules. It was interesting to see the difference in the feel of these. After a lunch of roast pork and salads we were instructed in some more advanced butchery techniques by "Chilly" again and we also saw a "thin" Jacob lamb hanging up to compare with a cross bred lamb that was too fat. Following on from that we had a go at stock judging some excellent one year old pigs, with varied results. Not many Jacob members thought of inspecting the number of teats in the sow! We were all grateful for Julian and his daughter Alice and her friends helping to make this a most interesting day.

  • May 16th Devon County Show. JSS SW Breed Stand has won the Gold Medal for the second year running! Many thanks to Chris and Charlottee for putting up the stand, to Vicky Hammond for re-doing some of the imformation for the boards, and also producing her stunning felted jacob goods, and to Jane Moor for spinning away and attracting members. Chris & Charlotte also won the Champion Jacob and shared the points cup with David and Mary Biggs.  More Photos on SW Facebook link.

  • May 12th Open Day at Bere Ferrers at Peter Gorringe's Shutecombe Flock (4805). More than 35  of us had a good day at Peter's flock, with many thanks for their fantastic hospitality, and help from other members too. We were honoured to have the Chairman of the JSS, Robert Locker with us. Members were really impressed with the quality of the sheep and newer members learnt from Anna Milner what points to look out for in the Jacob. They then had a chance to handle the shearling ewes, some with spectacular wool and put them in their order of preference. Robert Locker then explained the order the judges would choose. Members also saw the young lambs all going on well and looking very fit! After lunch both Charlotte and Chris Slee showed members how to undertake various stock tasks and answered any questions. Members then went to their other field overlooking the river and saw the two rams, bred by Bridget Wilson that have been used and the older lambs too. It was a cold day but most members had come prepared .... and said how much they had enjoyed it.
  • From the Jacob Sheep Society National AGM April 2013!

Many Congratulations Firstly: to Jane Moor from Exeter for winning the Individual Entry of the Wool Cup for a hat, mitts and bag set. (The photo taken on my ipad does not do the entry justice!) There were hundreds of entries from around the country and Ireland too, so we are delighted this cup has come to the South West. Many thanks indeed to not only Jane, but to Anna Milner for organising and collecting the SW entries and also for entering the competition herself and to other South West members who entered, Vicky Hammond, Sarah Weaver and Sue Blacker for going to the trouble of submitting some really super entries too.

Also Many Congratulations to Christopher Slee for winning the "Young Person of the Year Trophy", which was presented at the AGM meeting in recognition of all hew has done to help the region and the society.

We did see some nice sheep from the Eastern Region too...below!

Photos. If anyone has some nice Jacob lamb photos taken this year, do send them in and I will put them on the website, space permitting.

"South West Lambing Live Day" January 2013

Photos show vet Liz demonstrating possible mal presentations of a lamb, and Chris Slee tubing a lamb

Nineteen members attended this day with thanks to our hosts, the Slee family in Buckland Brewer in January.  The morning session covered the feeding regime for in-lamb ewes; ewe diseases and vaccination; lambing pens and equipment disinfection; lambing equipment and stores needed.  At lunchtime, Marilyn Slee kindly provided us all with hot soup to go with our picnics. Two of their ewes  decided to lamb in front of everyone, with Chris and Charlotte Slee quickly demonstrating what to do.  After lunch their  vet, Liz, showed everyone, with the help of a dead lamb, the various ways lambs can be positioned in a ewe’s uterus and when assistance might be needed and how to go about it; also she demonstrated how to inject glucose into an over 5 hour old hypothermic lamb. She showed us some good photos on her laptop of lambs with Schmallenberg disease and how to identify this. It was all very useful revision for the more experienced and essential for the newer members. Chris demonstrated how to feed a new lamb with a stomach tube, and Charlotte how to bottle feed a lamb, before demonstrations of castrating and correct ring tail docking and ear tagging new lambs with temporary tags for the benefit of some newer members there.

2012 AGM for SW Region held at Old Feniton Village Hall, near Honiton. 39 members attended the AGM and we were all very interested to hear a report from member, Diana Willoughby, who had attended the NSA meetings. The Fortescue Cup for a promising young member, was won by Mathew Willcocks and the flock competition results were announced: Large Flock 1st Julian Newth, 2nd Angela Gilbert, Highly Commended Julia Staughton. Small Flock 1st Vicki Hammond, 2nd James Barlow, Highly Commended Sarah Throgmorton. Best Overall Vicki Hammond, Best Novice Flock James Barlow. Highly Commended Bethan Keenor Best Pen of Ewe Lambs 1st Julian Newth, 2nd James Shinner, Highly Commended Chris Slee. Best Ram 1st Julia Staughton, 2nd Vicki Hammond.  I would like particularly to thank those  members who brought some delicious food, and all those who beavered away in the background washing up and clearing up afterwards. After lunch we had an excellent talk by Val Grainger, who used to run "the Woolly Shephed" She told us how to get the most from our skins and meat, and how to identify the best fleeces. There was also a photo competition as the breed promotion team always need good photos fro the boards. This was won for the second year running by Chris Slee, with Vicki Hammond as runner up.

Flock Assessment & Competition September 22/23rd The flock assessment and competition was entered by 12 members in the SW. This year it was particularly relevant as so many shows had been postponed or cancelled. The newer members were especially appreciative of the helpful remarks by the two judges, Dave Tuffney and John Fozzard. The judges were particularly impressed by the wool quality throughout the flocks they visited in the South West.  We are enormously grateful to them for coming from such a huge distance and covering nearly 900 miles over the week-end.

Jacob Sale at Sedgemoor 13th September 2012  Catalogue  Chris Slee, on behalf of the SW region was very helpful in liaising with Greenslade Taylor Hunt for the Jacob part of the Sale in the SW in conjunction with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust Show & Sale. Please see full report separately in Journal.  Most members who had entered thought this was definitely a worthwhile exercise in such an excellent and easily accessible venue with good facilities and some reasonable prices for most Jacobs, but hoped there could be a few changes, for instance the timing of the Jacob part of the sale, if this is to be repeated, hopefully as an official sale next year.

Wedding of Pete Boyne from Dawlish (Member 4314) & Amy. A lovely wedding on a beautiful sunny day, the bride and groom appeared outside the church under an arch of shepherd’s crooks, and then Amy braved sitting in a link box on the back of a Massey Ferguson 35, driven by Pete, to get to the reception. The cake of course featured a Jacob sheep in the decoration. We wish them very best wishes and look forward to seeing them showing again next year.

Young Handlers Day 12th August 2012  This was held at Burrow Way, Dalwood, Axminster, EX13 7ES  by kind permission of David & Mary Biggs (Member No 3402). We were very fortunate to have their considerable expertise at preparing sheep for show for the benefit of thirteen youngsters from 4- 14 yrs old.   Halter trained ewe and ram lambs were provided....please see Facebook link for results of the competition. Here David Biggs with some young volunteer's help is washing a lamb for show

Open Day July 1st 2012. This was held at Judy Bell's Allerbrook flock, and we are most grateful to both Judyand her daughter Cyrena for organising such a good felt making demonstration with Gerda Hatton-Ellis. Over 40 attended the day and some went on to make unique felt pieces. Meanwhile Geoff Connabeer kindly demonstrated hand shearing a sheep, even allowing a young member to have a go. Chris Slee and Pete Boyne kindly showed newer members how to prepare a sheep for show. We all had a good tour of the farm and were entertained by various animals and poultry, including nine baby Tamworth cross Saddleback piglets, Shetland cattle and calves, goats with quituplet kids, hens and chicks, geese, horses, donkeys and of course Jacobs.

The Chairman, Gareth Jones writes on May 29th 2011     "As you know this years Flock Book contains a number of errors. As a temporary fix an errata has been included with the books recently despatched but we will need to put the books right.(For those books collected from the AGM I have asked Louise to send on the errata) The correction job is going to be a mini project for someone rather than delay the day to day work of the Office.  Can you therefore please ensure members in your regions are aware that the Flock Book will, in due course, be put right."

The Open Day near Bideford was kindly hosted by members, brother & sister Christopher & Charlotte Slee and their parents Marilyn and John.  50 Members attended, so we split into two groups. One group were taken round Charlotte's flock and the other group were given an interesting talk by their vet Liz, and a practical demonstration on assessing rams, which was extremely useful to most members. Points to look out for in a ram coming into season were looked at, as well as the ram's most importants assets, which were measured using an Eblex tape measure. The shearling ram, one of their seven, came within the correct parameters! The groups then swapped round, the second group seeing Christopher's flock.

Following this, Vicky Hammond was presented with the first prize for her fleece and the South West Wool Cup by Anna Milner. Second was Angela Gilbert, and third Julia Staughton. 9 fleeces were brought forward for judging. Anna remarked on the excellent quality of all the fleeces entered.

After lunch mostly provided by catering friends of Marilyn, with an extra pudding and teas and coffees kindly added by Marilyn, everyone gathered round a pen of ewe lambs as Jean Blacknell spoke on different aspects of what to look for in the Jacob breed, for the benefit of newer members, and a reminder for older members. She then continued with the conformation of Jacobs using the pen of excellent senior rams to demonstrate the qualities to look for.

Sheep Racing followed. The 6 "racing" sheep were penned up one end of the course by Christopher and Charlotte, and then had teddies tied onto their backs using leather strpas, Marion's sister having knitted different colours for the jockeys. Geoffrey Connabeer then sold some raffle tickets, and members chose which sheep they thought would win. Racing was on a fairly long course, downhill one way, over some upturned troughs as jumps, with the going "soft". Sheep were encouraged to move, by their sheepdog. At the end of the course the sheep had to go through a hurdle width finishing line to the feed troughs. A few "jockeys" fell off and those sheep were eliminated! Returning uphill, the sheep with the lighter jockey won. Later on in the barn, the 16 kindly donated raffle prizes were drawn depending on the winning sheep's colours. Christopher and Charlotte had gone to so much trouble training the sheep every day for a week, and setting up bunting, and the course too and we were all very grateful. They then both showed us round their individual flocks, for those that had missed one of them. Many thanks are due to the whole Slee family for putting on such a professional and enjoyable day for members.

May 8th 2011 Juxton Flock Open Day Visit

Photos show Simon Schwerdt near the Dovecote, Sasha Schwerdt showing us their Red Devon Cows, and the Juxton ewes and lambs in the orchard.

This Open Day was held near Taunton, Somerset, by kind invitation of Simon and Sasha Schwerdt. We were all taken on a fascinating farm walk, seeing the Red Devons, the Jacobs in the Orchard, the doves and the lake and all the building works that have been going on to restore their barns using heat exchange energy source. Sasha had prepared a delicious home grown lunch, and then we had a short talk by Janet East about Breed Promotion. This was followed by a short talk by Sasha about the flowers and herbs she uses in cooking and sells to local restaurants. Regional Committee member, Peter Hunt, then gave an interesting talk about introducing bee-keeping to  livestock enterprises and his undoubted bravery encountering and using  "the Buckfast bee" in his own business!. Gareth Jones, Chairman of the JSS attended this event.
