Northern Region Xmas party 2011
at Fox and Hounds Langthorpe

A well attended lunch was enjoyed by a very happy gathering of Northern members - an excellent three course meal was followed by games (!) - organised by Becky Haworth and Kathleen Lowther amidst much laughter. A good start to Christmas.

Two Major Awards
Howard Walsh, until recently Northern Region Representative and owner of the Thornley flock in our region, has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to agricultural journalism. He was unanimously named winner of the Netherthorpe Award for 2011 which was presented by the Princess Royal at a Guild of Agricultural journalists lunch in London.
Howard has worked for Farmers Guardian for over 40 years, holding the position of Business Editor for the past eight years. One of his nominees wrote "his work is informative, precise and accurate in providing the vital link between the happenings and practicalities of modern farming with the need for wider readership to understand its function"
Congratulations to Howard from all in the Northern Region!
Richard Schofield, who some will remember gave a talk at the AGM last year in the Northern Region, has been awarded the prestigious '2011 Shearing Personality of the Year' at the British Isles Shearing Competition Association AGM. Colin MacGregor, who presented the award said "he stands out amongst the shearing instructors and has great respect from the shearing fraternity"
Richard, a shearing instructor for the British Wool Marketing Board, judges shearing competitions, is also a builder and roofer and keeps a flock of 160 sheep as a hobby.
Northern Autumn Meeting
held Sunday October 30th at the Fox & Hounds Langthorpe
The first meeting ably conducted by our new Northern Representative Gavin Haworth, was very well attended and most constructive. It was lovely to see new members attending and some of the old faces re-appearing.
An excellent lunch preceded our guest speaker, Mr Jonathan Stockton of Kingsway Veterinary Group, Skipton, who gave a very informative and interesting talk about worming and wormer resistance. Questions about this and other topics followed and I think everyone agreed it was a most enjoyable 'get-together'
.

- Regional Open Day - Around 60 people attended our May open day at Ron and Florence Verity's Crambe flock near York.
Stephen Dodsworth brought some of his four horned sheep for a useful judges' seminar overseen by regional field officer Dennis Lowther. Ron, Florence and family had gone to a lot of effort getting the place ready and competitions organised - including 'guess the weight' of the lambs with two nice Lleyn x Jacobs from John Fozzard. A local shearer gave a demonstration of machine shearing (Trevor and Pat Black brought most of their ewes for short back and sides !)
We were blessed with fine weather and treated to a superb lunch in the marquee - all in all an excellent day.

4 shearlings were placed in the judging competition
