IRELAND SHOW AND SALE 2011(PRICES THROUGH THE ROOF) - On Saturday 24th september we held the Ireland show and sale at Blessington mart in Co Wicklow. The numbers entered for this event were disappointing but for those members who sold their sheep the prices were outstanding. The event commenced with our breed inspection which follows breed standard guidelines and although inspections may have seemed very strict I feel that this can only help our breed to excel in years to come. Our field officer Jean Blacknell was the appointed judge for the day and although we only had 3 classes to judge our show created alot of interest from the passing public who were at the mart to see other breeds. The champion Jacob on the day was awarded to Sam Gogan with his supeb ewe lamb. Reseve champion went to Karl Gill with his 2 horned shearling ewe. The prices in the ring were fantastic and I hope that this will encourage more members to attend this show next year. The top priced Jacob on the day was a ram lamb from the Stonecroft flock(Geraldine Fletcher) who reached 550 euros. Other great prices were a ewe lamb from the Leck flock(Sam Gogan) who sold at 370 euros and a shearling ewe from the Castlehill flock( Karl Gill) who fetched 350 euros. NORTH AND SOUTH OPEN DAYS (21ST + 22ND MAY) : The Irish region held two open days this year with our chairman Gareth Jones as our special guest. The first held at the home of the Kingarrow flock in Omagh was a very succesful day with over 40 people in attendance and approx 90 jacob sheep on show. There was a shearing demo, spinning demo, preparing sheep for show and a stock judging competition. Derek Brown showed all the members and prospective new members how to get a Jacob ewe ready for show and explained the good and bad points that we would need to be aware off when buying and showing. The second open day was held at the home of the Sugarloaf/Stonecroft flock in Co Wicklow. With another great turnout of people and some excellent sheep on show the members had a very interesting day. We had a mock judging competition (Gareth Jones - Judge) which created alot of different opinions about what members looked for in their sheep and this was followed by a superb barbecue kindly put on by the Fletcher family. Both open days brought alot of new faces into the society and hopefully our membership list will continue to grow with more days like this. Ps : Anyone who would like to host next years open days please let me know.
